Google cancels talk about gender issues over employees concern about online harassment

According to Recode, in a letter to employees, Pichai said that holding the meeting would potentially bring harm to staff who have had their names and personal information published on sites in a practice known as "doxxing". All of your voices and opinions matter ... and I want to hear them.

Google often champions itself as a company that embraces alternative views and thinking, with Brown noting the company is open to hosting "difficult political views". At Google, 56 percent of the 441 employees surveyed opposed their company's decision to fire Damore.

Pichai was supposed to take employees' questions sent anonymously on diversity during the townhall event but cancelled it as many questions had leaked and individuals were identified, who then reportedly feared a backlash.

Meanwhile, what has recently garnered attention is Damore's LinkedIn page.

Damore had said that left-leaning prejudices at Google had shaped a "politically correct monoculture" at the company that muffled honest and open discussions about gender and race.

Google said that his words "violate our code of conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes". Damore argues in a federal labor complaint that this applies to his case, but experts disagree.

TL;DR Sorry for the late notice but we are going to cancel today's Town Hall.

The CEO said that the employees had expressed concerns about their safety as they anxious about being "outed", if they publicly raised questions in the meeting hall. "Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and anxious they may be "outed" publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall", the memo reads.

He said the company aimed to create several other forums "where people can feel comfortable to speak freely". "These things keep happening and the details change but the substantive portion of it is that women shouldn't be engineers are we aren't welcome".

Over the past two days, I have had the chance to meet with so many people here, and I have read each of your emails carefully. From the above stats, it is very clear that the former Google Engineer actually had significant support from all major tech firms. "When addressing the gap in representation in the population, we need to look at population level differences in distributions".

Inside Google, the memo and its fallout represent perhaps the biggest setback to what has been a foundational premise for employees: the freedom to speak up about anything and everything.

So, I asked Georgene Huang, one of the founders of FairyGodBoss.com - a website where women can rate the companies they work for - suppose you're a white male who thinks diversity training isn't working.

"Our job is to build great products for users that make a difference in their lives", Pichai wrote in an earlier email.
