Here's Everything in Hello Games' Enormous No Man's Sky Update

No Man's Sky is available for PlayStation 4 and PC, so here's hoping that Atlas Rises breathes some new life into the game and attracts more players.

From what we saw, Update 1.3, otherwise known as Atlas Rises, will feature an "overhauled central story line, portals, a new procedural mission system, trade improvements, system economies, joint exploration and more". Up to 16 players can see each other as odd floating orbs moving around on planets. Despite that, they were not actually able to interact in any way or even see each other.

You'll need to be in exactly the right places for this to happen however, so don't expect just to bump into people on the fly.

Interestingly, Hello Games had this to add: "While interaction with others is now very limited, this is an important first step into the world of synchronous co-op in No Man's Sky". In its own words, "Our story brings a new context, quest system and branching narrative to No Man's Sky". Developer Hello Games is also promising to streamline travel, improve the game's graphics, add new aliens and ships, and even incorporate some basic multiplayer elements. I was a little afraid that a more structured game would take away from the joy of exploration, but instead it's made the game easier to parse. You can view the full extent of the update over on the official website, which definitely is a long read. There are also newly structured missions that offer subtle tasks the player can opt to perform, such as combat missions, delivery missions, and shipwreck salvage projects. There's now a mission system, new ships, interstellar trading and oh so much more.

You've become part of the No Man's Sky origin story. On that trip, you'll also find new "exotic plant types" on some planets, with Hello Games saying that the look and variety of biomes have been improved.

Using new equipment players will be able to add and remove terrain around their base, introducing a more organic feel to base customisation. It's been re-calibrated to give you more info and better rewards for scanning everything you see.

Needless to say, that's hardly an ideal multiplayer experience for those who have stuck with a game that fell well short of expectations. Ancient portals can now be activated too, allowing players to revisit previous planets, others bases or jump randomly to new worlds. Full details can be found over here.
