Kenya: Return to Work as IEBC Does Its Work, Matiangi Tells Kenyans

Kenya: Return to Work as IEBC Does Its Work, Matiangi Tells Kenyans

President Uhuru Kenyatta was formally declared victor of Kenya's disputed presidential election on Friday night, raising fears of a violent backlash on the streets after his rival had earlier rejected the vote as a fraud.

Mr. Odinga, 72, the opposition leader, received 44.7 percent of the vote.

Kenya's opposition coalition is claiming to have won the elections even though provisional results from the electoral commision reflects otherwise.

Worldwide observers on Thursday gave the thumbs-up to the election, and USA ambassador Robert Godec issued a statement on behalf of the diplomatic community calling for the election commission to be given time to complete its work.

Following Mr. Odinga's claims, there were minor skirmishes in a Nairobi suburb and in Mombasa but residents in those areas said that criminals wanted to use the opportunity to loot while others wanted to settle scores.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said despite the few challenges the election process was generally successful.

More than 1,000 people were killed in a campaign of ethnic violence in the months after Odinga, defeated by then-President Mwai Kibaki, claimed the vote was rigged. "There was no serious security cases reported; I therefore urge Kenyans to remain calm", Matiangi said.

Mr. Kenyatta, 55, was re-elected with just over 54 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election, easily surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff, according to an announcement from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

"This country needs all of us pulling together for all of us to succeed", he said. "We all belong to Kenya".

Kenyatta, son of the country's founding father who in 2013 became Kenya's youngest president, was seeking a second and final five-year term.

"We don't want to fight", said driver Evans Omondi, 28, wearing a polo shirt and jeans. He added though, that the opposition doesn't plan on contesting the vote in court.

Orengo spoke Friday evening ahead of an expected announcement by the election commission, which has disputed opposition allegations of vote-rigging.

Odinga, a former prime minister, blamed Kenyatta's Jubilee Party for the alleged hacking.

Orengo said they would not seek redress through legal channels again, saying they had tried once and failed. A few miles from Kibera, there are Land Rover dealerships and new glass high rise towers, but the slum remains crime-ridden and poor, much of it without plumbing or electricity.

Two people were shot dead in Nairobi as they took advantage of the protests to loot, Nairobi police chief Japheth Koome said.

Violence broke out this week in some opposition strongholds in parts of the capital, Nairobi, and elsewhere.

Polling stations opened at 6am and closed at 5pm but many were in the queues as early as 2am. At least three people were killed amid clashes with police.

Protracted turmoil could derail an economy that's grown an average of 5.7 percent a year since Kenyatta took power in 2013, and threaten its reputation as a top African investment and tourist destination.
