Philippines prepares for N Korea's Guam missile threat

Philippines prepares for N Korea's Guam missile threat

Andersen Air Force Base houses a Navy helicopter squadron and Air Force bombers that rotate to Guam from the US mainland, including the B-2 stealth bomber, B-1 and B-52.

The Philippine consulate in Agana responded to North Korea's threat to fire missiles near the U.S. territory of Guam with an emergency contingency plan to help the thousands of Filipinos there respond to an attack.

According to the U.S. Pacific Command, the drill will include 500 Marines and 18 aircraft operating out of the 35th Fighter Wing at Misawa Air Base, on the northern tip of the island of Honshu.

The U.S. planes, which were created to carry nuclear bombs and later switched to conventional payloads, followed up the drills with Japan with a separate exercise with South Korean Forces, the ASDF said.

Consul General in Guam, Marciano de Borja told ABS-CBN News Channel on Friday they have come up with measures for situations that may arise should North Korea strike the island. Both are now living in Guam with their son while he serves in the military.

Malacañang on Thursday said contingency plans are in place in case a crisis hits Guam, the tiny United States territory recently thrust into the middle of the growing tension between the U.S. and North Korea. We are not just a military installation.

Guam is home to key military bases and 160,000 Americans. The U.S. took control of Guam in 1898, when Spanish authorities surrendered to the U.S. Navy. The U.S. built an air base on Guam in 1944 to stage its bombing missions to Japan, and has maintained an air and sea presence on the island since. It was also used as a transit point for evacuating Vietnamese refugees.

Guam: Small But Important Piece of US Territory in Pacific

But there's also some resentment about not being able to vote in the general election for US president.

Resident Isaac Camacho, 19, says he feels Guam's relationship with the USA mainland is "a little misunderstood on their part".

He said they are working closely with the Philippine community in Guam, and they didn't want to issue any statement that was not sychronized with Guam. Chamorros are the indigenous people of Guam.

Guam is about 2,100 miles (3,380 kilometers) southeast of Pyongyang and 3,800 miles (6,115 kilometers) west of Honolulu in the Pacific Ocean.

Three-hundred-fifty airmen from the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota are among military personnel on Guam, the tiny Pacific island that's been the focus of recent global attention with escalating tensions between the USA and North Korea.

Ellsworth B-1's were last sent to Guam from South Dakota in August 2016. In 2013, state media cited leader Kim Jong Un as having ordered his military to prepare plans on launching strikes on USA military bases in Guam, Hawaii and South Korea as well as the American mainland. The territory is protected with the US's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD, which can intercept missiles.
