Refugee arrivals by sea in Spain triple

Refugee arrivals by sea in Spain triple

The two incidents were the latest evidence of the significant uptick in the number of migrants seeking to make Spain their European point of entry. Despite Spain's increase, migration across Europe is down overall when juxtaposed with last year's numbers.

Southern Spain is already struggling to control shipments of arms, drugs, and illegal tobacco into Spain from Morocco in an increasingly violent trade, with police saying the gangsters are now "winning nearly all the battles".

A dramatic increase in the number of migrants arriving on Spanish shores means it may soon overtake Greece to become Europe's second most popular migrant destination.

The IOM is not at all opposed to mass immigration, and has in fact given migrants its full support throughout the current crisis.

This is a different tactic to many migrants arriving from Libya, who are often packed onto leaky, overloaded boats, with the intention of summoning aid as quickly as possible.

"Otero noted that Spain was capable of welcoming more refugees, adding that it could offer legal alternative ways to reach the country, such as humanitarian or student visas, adding that Spain was a somewhat safer route than those into Italy or Greece".

Since the beginning of 2015, more than 1 million migrants have come to Greece and more than 430,000 have come to Italy, but only 29,000 have gone to Spain, according to IOM. The number of sailings peaked in 2006 after Spain made loan and investment deals with several countries.

The teenagers will be taken to migrant reception centres, where they can apply for asylum in Spain.

The number entering Spain via the enclaves more than doubled in the first six months of the year from the same period in 2016 to 3,200 people, Spain's Interior Ministry said.

"It's unpredictable, but we have to prepare for an intense few months of arrivals given the good weather", Inigo Vila, head of the organization's emergency unit, said.
