School buses are on the road again

School buses are on the road again

A minimum 14 hours of classroom training and six hours of behind-the-wheel training are required to become a school bus driver, although some companies may require more than that. Unfortunately, not all motorists obey the rules of the road when it comes to school buses.

Maintain a safe distance - When you see the yellow-amber lights, this means a bus is approaching a bus stop. With Adams County schools set to start classes Monday, the Indiana State Police wants to remind drivers of the importance - and laws - of stopping for buses in the process of loading and unloading students. Police say it's up to all the other drivers to keep students safe on and off the bus.

Lee County's fleet of 127 school buses covers 108 routes every day, traveling just over 600,000 miles per year.

Motorists must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights and/or its stop arm is extended when approaching from the rear and from the opposite direction on undivided roads.

If there is no unimproved median or barrier, then all lanes in all directions must stop.

Children face their greatest risk when they walk up to or leave a school bus.

Bus drivers also can report vehicles that have passed their bus illegally.

Law enforcement takes school bus stop arm and school patrol crossing guard flag violations very seriously.

Be alert for school zones that have reduced speed limits when children are present.

DPS comprises 11 divisions where 2,100 employees operate programs in the areas of law enforcement, crime victim assistance, traffic safety, alcohol and gambling, emergency communications, fire safety, pipeline safety, driver licensing, vehicle registration and emergency management.

Some even have lights that spell out "STOP DO NOT PASS".

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, from 2003 to 2012, 174 school-age children died in school-transportation related crashes. "After a meeting with our bus drivers, principals, and Mr. Mills tonight, we all have chose to return to our bus route system from previous years", Moore wrote in part of the announcement.
