United States sends McCain's namesake to challenge Chinese maritime claims

United States sends McCain's namesake to challenge Chinese maritime claims

It comes as Donald Trump has urged China to do more to solve a worsening stand-off with North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

The US Navy has sailed the "USS John S. McCain" past an island in the disputed Spratly chain in the South China Sea, US officials told media.

McCain "traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, among a string of islets, reefs and shoals", Reuters reported.

The show of U.S. force came as the Trump administration upped the pressure on China to bring Pyongyang to heel, just hours after North Korea threatened to target a USA military base on the Pacific island of Guam.

Chinese navy guided missile frigates "took immediate action to identify and verify the U.S. ship, and warned and dispelled it", the Defense Ministry said.

Chinese Foreign Minister also claimed in an interview Monday that China has finished land reclamation over two years ago, and that those bringing up the issue on reclamation are the ones doing it.

"This clearly shows who does not want a stable South China Sea and who is the major force driving the militarization in these waters", the ministry spokesperson said.

Geng reiterated the Chinese government's willingness to safeguard national sovereignty and its maritime rights and interests.

Thursday's freedom of navigation operation was the third of its kind carried out by the U.S. since President Donald Trump took office in January. "The two most recent examples of this are at Tree Island and North Island in the Amphitrite Group", the think tank said. They do that on a daily basis, including the South China Sea.

Although the final joint communique decried militarization in the South China Sea, it neither mentioned Manila's arbitration win nor called for a legally binding code of conduct in the disputed waters.

In this regard, Geng remarked that China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) country members are focusing on strengthening cooperation to further the comprehensive and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and jointly develop regional standards.

China scolded the United States after the USS John S. McCain sailed near disputed reefs in the South China Sea on Thursday. "The operations are conducted in accordance with global law", she said.

Beijing has reclaimed land in massive dredging operations, turning sandbars into islands equipped with airfields, ports and lighthouses.

"According to the [Department of Foreign Affairs] they have already addressed this matter- that the area referred to is contested by both Vietnam and China, and not the Philippines", Abella said in a text message to CNN Philippines Thursday.

Mischief Reef is controlled by China but also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan.
