Bucs waive kicker Aguayo following preseason opener

Bucs waive kicker Aguayo following preseason opener

But as a rookie, he missed a league-leading nine field goals as well as two extra points.

The Bucs will move forward with veteran kicker Nick Folk. He was then brought out late in the fourth quarter for a 47-yard field goal attempt.

Aguayo set an NCAA record with Florida State for accuracy, prompting the Buccaneers to trade up to draft him.

In his three years in Tallahassee (2013-2015), Aguayo never made below 80 percent of his field goals. His 71% accuracy on field goals was the lowest in the NFL. He also missed two extra points. Folk was given a $1.75-million contract by the Bucs, including $750,000 guaranteed, more than Aguayo's entire 2017 salary. Immediately after they were ridiculed by everyone because no team ever takes a kicker that high in the draft.

Aguayo entered the game ahead of Folk on the team's depth chart, but clearly his performance cause the team to make the decision to cut him. He took a deep breath and appeared to be saying a prayer before turning to face reporters. He made 32 of 34 extra points last season. I know I pushed it a little bit, and I felt hopefully it would stay in but it broke right. I hit it good and it just started to fade. I want to change this. Obviously, not up to the standards that I want. It was starting down the line and it just kept fading.

Asked if he thought he may have cost himself a job with Friday's performance, Aguayo said, "You wanted to come out and be flawless". I've done big things throughout my career and I know that I'm capable of doing that and capable of being here. I hit some good kickoffs. I've just got to put it in the past.

But it turned out to be his last in a Bucs uniform.

"That's something that will definitely be talked about", Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter said after the game.

"You've got to enjoy it, you've got to embrace it", Aguayo told reporters on August 4 when asked about the competition.
