Charlottesville declares state of emergency ahead of white supremacist rally

A grey coloured auto can be seen reversing at high speed after the horror incident. As the sports vehicle retreats, a red athletic shoe falls off the bumper. "I place the blame for a lot of what you're seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president". Police officers spoke on bullhorns, directing people to leave.

Police arrived on campus, declared it an unlawful assembly, and ordered the crowds to disperse.

Response teams from Richmond are now at the scene as well as the Virginia National Guard.

It was not immediately clear if the collision was intentional.

Chanting "White lives matter!"

City officials and police say they are prepared for any violence. Virginia's governor has declared a state of emergency in response to a white nationalist rally that is expected to draw up to 6,000 people.

Charlottesville, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a liberal-leaning city that's home to the flagship University of Virginia and Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.

The Charlottesville confrontation was a stark reminder of the growing political polarization that has intensified since Trump's election past year.

TORCH wielding white supremacists chanted Nazi slogans as they marched through a USA university last night to complain that white history was being erased from America's identity.

At least one person was arrested and several others treated for minor injuries, according to local newspaper The Daily Progress. White supremacists gathered near the college campus to protest the removal of a Confederate statute. "We need an exorcism on the Lawn", Larry Sabato, director of the university's Center for Politics, tweeted.

Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer's called the demonstration a "cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism and intolerance".

The Unite the Right rally, set to take place in the Emancipation Park and McIntire Park, will see the participation of Neo-Nazis, neo-Confederates, and alt-right activists.

In February, the city council voted to remove the Lee statue, but that is on hold pending litigation.

There were vicious clashes on Market Street in front of Emancipation Park, where the rally was to begin at noon.

Federal Judge Glen Conrad granted a preliminary injunction Friday evening in the lawsuit Jason Kessler filed against the city of Charlottesville, allowing Saturday's "Unite the Right" rally to remain in Emancipation Park. "It's been going on for a long, long time", he said.

Other politicians didn't have issues calling out the people who were responsible. Trump said Saturday on Twitter: "Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let's communicate w/o hate in our hearts".
