Contaminated eggs scandal hit 15 European Union states, besides Switzerland, Hong Kong: EC

Contaminated eggs scandal hit 15 European Union states, besides Switzerland, Hong Kong: EC

The owner said his Spanish eggs had already been checked for chemicals, but that the USA and Hong Kong offerings may be "safer".

The Centre for Food Safety revealed on Friday that two samples of Dutch eggs exceeded the local legal limit for Fipronil, a highly toxic pest control chemical banned from the production of food.

The UK food watchdog said about 700,000 eggs had been sent to the country from potentially contaminated Dutch farms, up from an earlier estimate of 21,000.

It added that the poultry industry should "also stop using or selling the affected batch of the product immediately should they possess it". Heavy and prolonged exposure can damage the kidneys and liver or cause seizures.

The European Commission (EC) has said a total of 15 EU states besides Switzerland and Hong Kong, are now known to have received egg products contaminated by an insecticide harmful to human health.

The Agriculture Ministry says the French farm reported on July 28, as the scandal was coming to light, that Dega 16 had been used on the farm by a Belgian subcontractor, and the ministry claims no eggs concerned have been sold.

The scandal has caused major political fallout, with neighbours Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany squabbling over who is to blame, and who knew what and when.

European Union commissioner for health and food safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, stressed that the meeting would not be a crisis summit, nor would its goal be to apportion blame.

(Vatican Radio) The European Commission says that at least fifteen EU countries, as well as Hong Kong and Switzerland, have received eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil.

Its competitor, Wellcome, went further and claimed its customers could obtain a refund on the purchase of eggs from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
