Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill To Undergo Season-Ending ACL Surgery

Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill To Undergo Season-Ending ACL Surgery

The Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Ryan Tannehill on injured reserve with a left knee injury, sidelining him for the entire season.

Tannehill missed the final four games of last season with two sprained ligaments in his knee, and he reinjured it a week into training camp.

Tannehill chose to avoid surgery after last season's injury. Cutler's apparent retirement was short lived when he made a decision to sign a one-year deal with Miami to become the starter in place of the injured Tannehill.

With the Dolphins, he'll be reunited with Adam Gase, Miami's head coach who helped Cutler to his most efficient season while serving as Chicago's offensive coordinator in 2015. The 29-year-old fell to the ground on a non-contact play when his left knee appeared to buckle. Tannehill will be owed around $60 million if the Dolphins decide to keep him for the next three seasons.

Miami will have a hard decision to make after this season. He suffered a torn labrum in his right throwing shoulder and underwent surgery in December.

Tannehill's $17.98 million salary for this year is fully guaranteed. Brandon Doughty and David Fales are further down the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart.

Miami expects Tannehill to return in 2018 and compete for, if not immediately reassume, its starting quarterback job.

Tannehill will still be around the team this season, Gase said. He is signed through 2020 at annual salaries of less than $20 million, a reasonable rate for an National Football League starter at his position.
