Liverpool's owners insists that Philippe Coutinho will not be sold to Barcelona

Liverpool's owners insists that Philippe Coutinho will not be sold to Barcelona

After various reports that Liverpool are adamant that they will not sell star midfielder Philippe Coutinho, Sky Sports has reported that the Brazilian has handed in his transfer request to makes his move to Barcelona.

The development comes only a couple of hours after Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group issued a statement saying that he was not for sale.

Liverpool insist that they will stand firm and that the player will not be sold at any price.

Sources close to the player told ESPN Brazil this week that Coutinho had been keen to move, and Liverpool legend Gerrard - now working as academy coach at Anfield - said it would be down to the player to force an exit.

He said: "Liverpool have rejected Coutinho's transfer request".

Klopp said: "I can't keep players happy - I can't keep you happy!"

Even if Barcelona are tempted to return with a bid in excess of £100million, Liverpool have made it clear that they will give the same response and they are building their team around Coutinho, who signed a five-year deal in January.

It was furthered with FSG's definitive position that "no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool football club when the summer window closes".

When asked if he had to keep Coutinho happy, the German revealed the fact he is unavailable for selection due to a back injury is the greater problem.

On that occasion, owner John W Henry also played hardball, effectively forcing Suarez to stay for another year, until Barcelona came calling with a better offer. "That is set in stone", he told Sky Deutschland.

The 25-year-old was their leading scorer with 14 goals in all competitions last term, a season that saw Klopp's men secure a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
