OpenAI Bot Remains Undefeated against World's Greatest Dota 2 Players

OpenAI Bot Remains Undefeated against World's Greatest Dota 2 Players

Elon Musk may be terrified of artificial intelligence (AI) and spreading a message of AI-led doom, but that hasn't stopped him from funding companies that are developing advanced AI.

"League of Legends" (pic) and "Dota 2" have dominated recent PC gaming revenues, says DFC.

In an accompanying blog post, OpenAI published that its bot has been undefeated over the last few days in Dota 1v1, a "complex game with hidden information [in which] agents must learn to plan, attack, trick, and deceive their opponents".

The AI win stunned the gaming community, because bots are generally considered inferior to expert human players. Vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go. Each round, the teams choose from a list of roughly 100 characters, called heroes, who each have different strengths, weaknesses and special abilities, with one player controlling one hero each. OpenAI CTO Greg Brockman said it took two weeks to train the bot, and it had previously beaten the world's top 1v1 player and the overall top-ranked player in the world. "It starts out completely random with no knowledge of the world, and simply plays against a copy of itself - which means it always has an evenly matched opponent", Brockman said.

The full game of Dota is played by two teams of five.

A video introduction for the bot showed various (human) Dota 2 players sharing their opinions on bots. The AI "feels a little like [a] human, but a little like something else", Dendi said.

"This guy is scary", Dendi repeated during play as the bot whittled down his health. Right now, the company had just developed one single bot.

"Would like to express our appreciation to Microsoft for use of their Azure cloud computing platform", he wrote.
