50 feared dead in major landslide in Himachal Pradesh

Meanwhile, seven persons were confirmed killed and several feared trapped after the landslide that occurred around midnight and damaged the Mandi-Pathankot National Highway 154 as well.

The two buses were hit at a refreshment stall near near Kotropi village on the Mandi-Pathankot highway, around 220 km from Shimla, at around 12.20 am Sunday.

As per the last reports, another bus that rolled down into the gorge was still not traceable and all out efforts were on to remove the debris to locate the buried passengers.

The other bus was caught up in the landslide and was found two kilometres away.

Army and NDRF teams rushed to the rescue, with more than 100 Army personnel of 9 Grenadier reaching the site from Palampur.

Rescue workers were finding it hard to retrieve the remains of the Manali-bound bus as it rolled down 800 metres below the road and got stuck under a huge mound of debris.

Rescue teams from NDRF and the Army were called at the scene of the landslide from Kangra to take up the rescue and rehabilitation operation on a war-footing.

At least 46 were reportedly killed in a massive landslide in northern India, Sputnik reported. Five people who were injured in the incident were shifted to a local hospital. He directed the administration to assess the loss of life and property for early reimbursement of the compensation. "The relief announcement will be done by the Government as per the schedule", Singh told ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences in a tweet.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, along with Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur, Transport Minister G S Bali and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anil Sharma, visited the accident spot.

"I am in constant touch with the district authorities and other concerned officials", Bali added.
