Bryce Harper helped off of field after suffering left knee injury

Bryce Harper helped off of field after suffering left knee injury

In the bottom of the first inning of Saturday's game between the Nationals and Giants, Bryce Harper hit a ground ball to first base and raced to the bag trying to beat Giants' Ryder Jones there. He was unable to put weight on his left leg following the incident and had to be carried off the field by team trainers. Rizzo said he was "optimistic" that Harper would be back this season.

As a result of the rainout, Nationals manager Dusty Baker had to wait another day to catch Bochy on the all-time wins list.

The San Francisco Giants lost a rain-soaked contest against the Washington Nationals on Saturday night, but it was the Nationals that took the bigger long-term hit on a rain-soaked evening in the nation's capital. He was not made available to speak to reporters.

Harper was in severe and obvious pain, sending baseball fans into a frenzy, many believing the injury was a torn ACL. "You're just thinking, 'Please, Lord, don't let it be serious'".

"He's definitely one of those guys that you can't replace on a team", starter Edwin Jackson said.

San Francisco Giants' Gorkys Hernandez, right, steals second against Washington Nationals shortstop Wilmer Difo (1) during the fourth inning of the first baseball game of a split doubleheader, Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017, in Washington.

NOTES: Giants RHP Mark Melancon, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, was activated off the disabled list and INF Miguel Gomez (right knee inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 9. They have been without Adam Eaton since late April because of a torn ACL in his left knee that ended his season, Jayson Werth since early June because of a bruised left foot and Michael Taylor since July with a right oblique strain.

"We dodged a bullet here", said Mike Rizzo, adding that it was "pretty remarkable" that Harper avoided a more significant injury.
