Floods, landslides claim 30 lives in Nepal

Floods, landslides claim 30 lives in Nepal

With the death toll in flood-affected Nepal crossing 50, India on Sunday said that it was ready to support and cooperate its neighbour in all ways and means.

"Monsoon induced disasters have taken the lives of 64 people, 44 have been injured, 36 have gone missing and around 19,000 families have been displaced", a statement said.

A Home Ministry official said more than 5,000 people had been shifted from the affected areas. Hundreds of tourists remain trapped in the hotels.

The Nepal Red Cross Society is also working with local authorities to warn thousands of people of further threats from rising rivers and further landslides.

The resort town is a popular tourist destination and home to the famed Chitwan National Park where visitors go on safaris and elephant rides.

The rain is expected to continue in the coming days, according to the Nepal Meteorological Forecasting Division, raising fears that the rivers might wash more villages away.

Chief District Officer Narayan Prasad Bhatta said four rubber rafts have been sought from neighbouring Devghat to carry out relief operations.

Several highway bridges have collapsed and roads were blocked by landslides and floods, leaving thousands of travellers stranded, local media reported on Sunday.

According to the ministry, some 35,843 houses have been inundated while 1,000 houses have been damaged in the low-lying areas known as Terai region of Nepal.

Almost 100 people died a year ago in Nepal during the rainy season, which typically begins in late June and lasts until the end of August.

An emergency meeting headed by Minister for Home Affairs Janardan Sharma today formed a central command post for intensifying rescue operations in the country.

Landslides and flooding are common in the Himalayan region during the monsoon season, which runs from June through September.
