In challenge to US, Iran adds funding to missile program

The countermeasures, which were approved by 240 Iranian lawmakers on Sunday, would see more money allocated to Iran's missile program as well as to the Quds Force, the Revolutionary Guards' extraterritorial operations branch, among other measures. Head of the Federation Council's global affairs committee Konstantin Kosachev says the decision to increase financing of the missile program, adopted by the Iranian parliament, is a logical response to the US tougher sanctions.

"The Americans should know that this was our first action", Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani said after stating that the majority voted for a package "to confront terrorist and adventurist actions by the United States in the region", as quoted by AFP. In response to this, Iran complained to the UN Security Council about the USA sanctions and accused Washington of breaching the nuclear deal.

After Larijani announced the vote results, lawmakers shouted: "Death to America".

Earlier this month, the U.S Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed legislation imposing new sanctions on Iran over its missile program.

He praised the bill, saying it "was designed wisely so that it does not violate the (nuclear deal) and provide excuses for opposing sides".

Mr Trump has recently backed away from his key campaign promise to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

The legislators stressed that the bill does not violate the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major world powers, but accused Washington of attempts to "kill" the landmark agreement. Tehran says its missile program does not breach a United Nations resolution which endorsed the nuclear deal.

The motion was designed in view of continued bellicose policies of the USA towards Iran, and its persisting measures aimed at endangering peace and security in the region, it said.
