Mo Farah runs out of steam in farewell

Mo Farah runs out of steam in farewell

The 34-year-old had already won the 10,000m last week, but the end of the 5,000m was emotional, with Sir Mo collapsing to the track after the race before being hauled to his feet.

Victor of 10 consecutive global titles dating back to 2011, the Portland-based British Olympic star shockingly finished second in his last on-the-track IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championship race, a 5,000 meters on Saturday.

Farah finished in a time of 13:33.22, with Edris's time clocked at 13:32.79. He ran 13:35.43. Justyn Knight, who impressively made the final competing on his first outdoor senior national team for Canada, finished ninth in 13:39.15 as both Canadians finished in the top-10.

Paul Chelimo of the United States took bronze. The pack, Farah included, let Tiernan lead by about 10m for a few laps in the closing stages.

But on the final lap, Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, the world indoor 3,000 victor at Portland a year ago, accelerated to the front.

"I'm going to still keep fighting, keep working, making my country proud", said Farah, who will now concentrate on running marathons. So many times, you guys have been unfair to me.

With Salazar reportedly under investigation for giving athletes banned supplements and substances, Farah insists the repeated questions about their relationship is "like a broken record" and that he has distanced himself this year from the coach, who has not been at any of his races and may not continue to work with him as he takes to road racing.

"I was highly prepared for this race and I knew I was going to beat Mo Farah", said the Ethiopian.

It's been fantastic. It's been a long journey but it's been incredible. I didn't have a single bit left at the end.

"Mo has many victories but now I have one", said the 23-year-old.

"I am the next champion".

Quite simply, Farah will go down in history as Britain's best-ever athlete and one of the greatest the world has ever witnessed.

Afterward Edris did the Mobot, Farah's signature postrace move, to celebrate his win and out of respect for Farah.
