Oakland Raiders Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem

Oakland Raiders Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem

Five-time Pro Bowl NFL running back Marshawn Lynch sat on a water cooler before Saturday's preseason contest between Oakland and Arizona, according to multiple reports.

Del Rio said he spoke with his new running back about his protest, and Lynch told him, "He said, 'This is something I've done for 11 years". But I'm going to respect you as a man, you do your thing.

The decision by Lynch to sit comes the same day that civil unrest rocked the city of Charlottesville, Va.

Lynch, who rose to National Football League stardom as a member of the Super Bowl winning Seattle Seahawks, initially retired after the 2015 season before applying for reinstatement.

At that same time, Oakland Raiders' running back, Marshawn Lynch chose to sit and protest the National Anthem.

Lynch didn't speak publicly about the gesture after the game, which was his first since returning from retirement.

Sitting on the bench during the preseason, as opposed to kneeling, is also how Colin Kaepernick began his anthem protest previous year.

Lynch's motivations for sitting during the anthem are unclear, but it's possible he was doing so in protest and in an homage to Kaepernick.

According to NFL Network's Michael Robinson, Lynch has routinely sat down during the National Anthem. Kaepernick, who has not signed with any teams since his contract ended last season with the 49ers, has said he would stand during the National Anthem in 2017, but as of now, is not on any team's roster.

"I'd rather see him take a knee than stand up, put his hands up, and get murdered", Lynch said. "So my take on it is, it got to start somewhere, and if that was the starting point, I just hope people open up their eyes to see that it's really a problem going on, and something needs to be done for it to stop", Lynch said during an interview with Conan O'Brien.
