Pastor freed from North Korean prison has landed in Canada, government says

Pastor freed from North Korean prison has landed in Canada, government says

Hyeon Soo Lim was released on what state media described as "sick bail" after being handed a life sentence with hard labour in 2015.

He appeared slightly frail but in good spirits as he returned to his congregation at the Light Korean Presbyterian Church in Mississauga, a Toronto suburb.

News of his release surfaced on Wednesday, when North Korea's KCNA news agency said Lim was being let go on humanitarian grounds, suggesting his health was poor.

This liberation has been obtained at the time when tensions are intensifying between North Korea and the United States, of which three citizens are still being held prisoner in North Korea.

He made the appearance just one day after arriving home on a small government aircraft Saturday morning.

A Canadian pastor recently freed from imprisonment in North Korea spoke Sunday of the "overwhelming loneliness" and harsh conditions he experienced during his two-and-a-half years in a labor camp. "One of the things my father shared is that as a Canadian going to North Korea for him was to be able to share the blessing of Canada to those in North Korea", the pastor's son said.

Hyeon Soo Lim was released from prison earlier in the week after a Canadian delegation - led by Daniel Jean, who serves as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's national security and intelligence adviser - travelled to Pyongyang, North Korea. "There's a lot of complexity to it", James Lim said.

Mr. Lim's family had grown increasingly concerned for his wellbeing following the death of Mr. Warmbier. "It catalyzed discussions over additional human-rights-focused sanctions and prompted countries to re-evaluate their policies on tourism to the North", said Andrea Berger, senior research associate at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. "When they are threatened, we are there", she said.

"He is doing very well, considering everything he has gone through", he said.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has pledged Canada's support to the United States, calling North Korea's nuclear missile program "a grave threat to the world".
