Yankees' Montgomery OK after hit in head at batting practice

Yankees' Montgomery OK after hit in head at batting practice

After the clubs split the first two games this weekend - the Yankees rallied for a 5-4 win on Friday night before being shellacked 10-5 on Saturday afternoon - Boston still has the same 4 1/2-game lead that it had when arriving to NY.

And as unthinkable as it was a month ago, when Judge was the clear MVP of the AL, never mind Rookie of the Year, it's not out of the question that Benintendi could give him a run for the rookie award.

In the first of 10 games between the AL East rivals in 24 days, the Yankees sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth. He gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out four in 4⅓ innings.

The 26-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in 2013 after he was not drafted before embarking on his U.S. Army commitment. Andrew Benintendi was Severino's kryptonite on Saturday, taking him deep for a pair of three-run homers.

But they are 3-4 in their last seven games, including a 6-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. Boston LHP David Price (left elbow inflammation) completed a long-toss session for the second straight day by making throws from 120 feet without any pain.

- Mitch Moreland went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Mookie Betts had a two-run single for Boston, now 4-7 against NY this season.

DETROIT - Justin Upton hit a two-run homer off Matt Belisle in the ninth inning, giving Detroit a win over Minnesota after the Tigers wasted a five-run lead and then overcame a five-run deficit.

ST. LOUIS - Paul DeJong and Randal Grichuk each homered to support Carlos Martinez's six solid innings as surging St. Louis edged Atlanta. Matt Barnes followed with a hitless seventh that extended the scoreless streak by Boston's bullpen to 19 innings.

PHOENIX - Chicago was held to five hits through eight innings in a loss to Arizona. He also joined Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx as the second Boston player to belt two three-run homers against the Yankees.

Judge went 0-for-4 and twice was called out on strikes on sharp curveballs. Scott Alexander (3-3) posted the win in relief. Luis Severino (9-5), the de facto ace of the staff, was charged with a career-high 10 runs in 4 1⁄3 innings. After hitting the two homers, he is 6-for-11 off the hard-throwing right-hander. But the Red Sox got to Severino again in the fifth, with Benintendi's homer off a hanging slider the big blow.

Jaime Garcia made it through two outs into the sixth inning before Joe Girardi brought in Adam Warren, who completely shut down a loaded Boston lineup. McCann's grand slam in the first put the Tigers on top 5-0.

MIAMI - Giancarlo Stanton continued his power surge with his 41st homer and drove in three runs in Miami's victory over Colorado.

MILWAUKEE - Eric Sogard scored on an 10th-inning wild pitch as Milwaukee snapped a six-game losing streak by beating Cincinnati.

It didn't matter that the Red Sox went down in order six times.

Besides Benintendi's historic showing, Mookie Betts added a two-run single in the third and rookie Rafael Devers contributed a two-run double in the fifth.

PHILADELPHIA - Aaron Nola stifled NY for seven innings, allowing one earned run and two hits while striking out eight in Philadelphia's come-from-behind victory. The Red Sox are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings in NY, 4-10 in the last 14 meetings and the over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in NY.

Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes crushed the only bad pitch from Nola, a 2-1 curveball, deep over the left field fence to give NY a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
