One of SeaWorld's oldest killer whales dies

One of SeaWorld's oldest killer whales dies

Kasatka was one of the last killer whales to enter the park from the wild. Kasatka died surrounded by her pod, all of which "appear to be doing well" and were not threatened by Kasatka's infection, the park said. The 42-year-old killer whale's veterinarians, who are experts in marine animal medicine, and her caretakers "made the hard decision to humanely euthanize her to prevent compromising her quality of life", according to the statement.

In Kasatka's case, veterinarians said she battled a respiratory bacterial infection for several years, but as she aged, it became more hard fending off the lung illness. "Although I am heartbroken, I am grateful for the special time we had together. and all we have learned from her".

"I tried to get the media to expose it, I tried to have ANYONE force them to take pics of her", he tweeted following the death.

SeaWorld euthanized one of the entertainment company's last killer whales to come from the wild, marking the third orca death this year at one of its marine parks.

In 1978 she was captured off the coast of Iceland and is related to numerous whales now at the park.

SeaWorld has not collected a wild orca in almost 40 years, and most of its orcas were born in captivity. SeaWorld says she had four calves, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

SeaWorld has 21 orcas left in the U.S. The youngest, Amaya, was born in December 2014.

The park said the 10 remaining orcas are believed to be healthy, but any changes in their behaviour will be closely monitored. "SeaWorld talks of "love" for her and her family, yet it made a business out of tearing her away from her family as well as ripping apart other bonded orcas and shipping them across the country, even separating Kasatka from her podmate in 1984".

"Nobody knows more about caring for killer whales than the professionals at SeaWorld", said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the post of SeaWorld's website.

Across its USA and overseas parks, there are 33 killer whales, nearly all born in captivity.

In March 2016, SeaWorld announced it would end breeding orcas and phase out the whale's performances in San Diego, according to The New York Times. Tilikum, the whale that killed trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010, died in January and 3-month-old Kyara died at SeaWorld San Antonio three weeks ago. The company's public image has suffered and attendance at its parks has declined.
