NFL, Goodell working on 5-year contract extension

NFL, Goodell working on 5-year contract extension

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he wanted to work with the NFL Players Union prior to coming up with a revised policy on player conduct.

According to ESPN and Sports Business Daily, the National Football League is nearing an extension for its commissioner, who is already signed through the 2019 season.

The terms of Goodell's new deal, if reached, would be similar to his current contract which expires in 2019, according to the Sports Business Journal.

On the other hand, Adam Schefter of ESPN has added that, "Talks for Roger Goodell's new deal have not progressed as some thought, per source".

Goodell earned more than $31 million in the league's 2015 fiscal year, according to a tax filing. With some new stadiums having been built, a Las Vegas relocation, a move back to Los Angeles by the Rams and money pouring in, most of those voices are in Goodell's corner as long as things are good for them business-wise.

In 2016, Goodell reportedly made $34 million as commissioner.

The new contract is expected despite that Goodell, 58, has recently butted heads with two owners: the Patriots' Robert Kraft over the Tom Brady "Deflategate" scandal and the Cowboys' Jerry Jones over running Ezekiel Elliott's six-game domestic-violence suspension.

While Goodell's job comes with a natural dose of divisiveness, he has become the face of player discontent with the league's discipline system. Because the league office is no longer classified as a tax-exempt organization, the commissioner's salary is no longer required to be made public.
