Johnson & Johnson to pay $417m in cancer lawsuit

Johnson & Johnson to pay $417m in cancer lawsuit

- A jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to pay $417m (£323m) to a woman who claimed she developed ovarian cancer after using the company's talc-based products such as Johnson's Baby Powder for feminine hygiene, The Guardian reports.

A spokeswoman for Johnson & Johnson, Carol Goodrich, said the company would appeal the verdict handed up by a jury in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and was preparing for additional trials.

A jury ruled Monday that Johnson & Johnson (J&J) must pay a woman with ovarian cancer $417 million for failing to warn consumers of the purported dangers of the product.

"These cases are about fighting for justice for women all over California who are suffering from ovarian cancer because of Johnson and Johnson's covering up the truth for so many years". A woman in Virginia, who claimed to have been using the powder for 40 years, won a $110.5 million lawsuit in a St Louis court in Missouri after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012.

J&J have hit back saying that scientific studies, as well as the federal agency US Food and Drug Administration, have not found that talc products have the potential to cause cancer.

Still, other talc-based powders on the market carry warning labels mentioning the possible risk of ovarian cancer if used frequently in the female genital area, in order to inform consumers and protect against lawsuits such as Echeverria's.

"She really didn't want sympathy", Robinson says. Her attorneys argued that, while it may not have been the only contributing factor to her cancer growth, it only had to prove it was a "substantial factor". She only stopped after watching a news story about a woman with ovarian cancer who had also used the talc for a similar objective, she said.

"We understand that women and families affected by ovarian cancer are searching for answers, and we deeply sympathize with all who have been affected by this devastating disease with no known cause", Ms. Goodrich said in a statement at the time. "She just wanted to get a message out to help these other women", Mr Robinson said.

American multinational pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, lately.

$417 million is the largest sum awarded in a series of talcum powder lawsuit verdicts against Johnson & Johnson in courts around the US. Studies had linked its baby powder and Shower to Shower talc products to cancer.

Talcum powder is made from talc, a mineral mainly containing magnesium, silicon and oxygen.

Echeverria says that she first developed ovarian cancer in 2007.
