Bangladesh favourites against Australia in 1st Test, says Dean Jones

Bangladesh favourites against Australia in 1st Test, says Dean Jones

Already Australia's best ever offspinner, Lyon added two more accomplishments after taking three wickets during day one of the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

From 10 for three on a hard pitch, that had enough early-morning moisture to encourage Australia's pace attack while offering turn at pace for the spinners, opener Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan carried the team to 165 without further loss, and they did so in just 41.3 overs, both striking half-centuries in their 50th Tests.

The duo responded to the occasion with such composure that it sent out a clear message to the visiting Australians about what to expect from the rest of the two-Test series.

In 2008, Australia were scheduled to host Bangladesh for two winter Tests, but that series was postponed until 2010 due to a clash with the Beijing Olympics.

Speaking after play, Lyon said he he hadn't seen the Khawaja run out, but while he acknowledged that it was not ideal, the off-spinner insisted Australia remained well and truly in the hunt.

Lyon and recalled left-arm spinner Ashton Agar spun through the Bangladesh middle-order and tail to finish with a combined six wickets.

Spinner Mededi Hasan Miraz - who destroyed England late past year - ensured David Warner's poor record on the subcontinent continued, removing the Australian vice-captain LBW for eight.

Matt Renshaw and Steven Smith were on 6 and 3 respectively.

THE Australian Test team, fresh from a bitter contract standoff, has prepared for tomorrow's first Test against Bangladesh by visiting slums in the capital Dhaka.

The day was far from a total failure though for Lyon, who took 3-79 in the Bangladesh innings to advance to 250 Test wickets, moving ahead of Richie Benaud (248 wickets) in Australia's all-time Test list. Facing the spin-heavy attack, they held their own with both bat and ball and will now look to draw on that experience in Bangladesh, where the pitches are expected to be worse.

In four previous matches, Bangladesh have never beaten Australia and only avoided an innings defeat once, although their last meeting was back in 2006.

Spinners Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan and Taijul Islam, who combined for 20 wickets during their historic win against England a year ago, loom as the key players for the host. "They bowl stump to stump and put pressure on your defence so I suppose that's one thing we will work on".

As recently as the lead-in to Australia's tour to India earlier this year, where the 29-year-old pocketed his career-best return of 8-50 in the second Test at Bengaluru, questions were aired about his potency on Asian pitches, against the game's most accomplished wranglers of spin bowling. "They batted with goal and chose their bowlers very precisely unlike before when we were not sure what we really wanted to achieve".

"I think the two guys batted very fearless", Lyon said. There was more damage in Cummins' next over as the quick found an inside edge to remove Imrul Kayes caught behind for a duck.
