Amazon's Alexa Brings Multiroom Audio To Echo - And Soon To Sonos & Bose

Amazon's Alexa Brings Multiroom Audio To Echo - And Soon To Sonos & Bose

Which Amazon Music subscription should you get?

The online retail giant revealed a new feature on Tuesday for its Internet-connected speaker that lets people play music in certain areas of their homes. Once you've created the group, simply say "Alexa, play Taylor Swift downstairs".

One of the key features to Amazon's Alexa-powered speakers - such as its Echo or Lenovo's Smart Assistant - is the ability to playback music and control it with your voice. And be sure to name the group something easy to remember (like "upstairs"), since you'll use the group name to initiate a streaming session.

The newly announced Multi-Room Music software development kit (SDK) will allow consumer electronics companies to ship devices which can be natively grouped with the Echo lineup, Amazon said, adding that this tool is scheduled to be released later this year. Support for Siri would be fantastic, but given that Apple's about to come out with a speaker it specifically described as a rival to Sonos, that seems unlikely.

Amazon says that multi-room audio is supported for Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and Pandora to start. Tap through that to create a new group of Echo devices that you'll want to stream to simultaneously.

Alexa Multi-Room Music is available on the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show, and can be enjoyed by customers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. The $179 Amazon Echo is out of stock on Amazon right now, which could either be the result of a perfectly innocent sale, or a sign that Amazon has ditched stock ahead of a refresh. This has been a close collaboration from the beginning as we've worked together to combine the magic of Alexa with the seamless multi-room audio capabilities that Sonos pioneered.
