Hackers warn retailer CeX it has hit about 2m customer credentials

Hackers warn retailer CeX it has hit about 2m customer credentials

As reported by the BBC, Cex is calling it a "sophisticated breach" stressing that this affects online account holders, while clarifying that in-store data has not been affected.

In a statement, Cex said it had employed a cyber-security specialist to review its systems, to prevent a "sophisticated breach" from happening again.

Second-hand video game and gadget retailer Cex has said up to two million of its customers have had their private details stolen.

The data breach should not contain any now active card information, as CEX ceased storing card information in 2009, but it may contain names, full home addresses, emails and phone numbers. The company said it stopped collecting this information in 2009, so even if the encryption is broken, the damage should be minimal. However none of these have been affected and the in-store personal membership information has been compromised.

The data that was compromised was online-only.

Customer data for the retailer's online shop, such as account usernames and passwords, are not believed to have been compromised in the attack, reports ZDnet.

The firm is also recommending that affected customers change their passwords if they reused it across multiple accounts and services.

The company says they are taking the matter "extremely seriously", and has issued guidelines and advice for customers whose personal data may have been accessed. The breach has potentially put 2 million customers at risk of their personal details being exposed.

CeX has 575 stores worldwide, including 363 in the United Kingdom, and sells pre-owned video games and consoles, smartphones, computers, tablets, movies, and other electronic products.

As well as its hundreds of stores, the company also operates the webuy.com online marketplace. "We ceased storing customer card details in 2009". "Together we have implemented additional advanced measures of security to prevent this from happening again", the company added.
