Sony LF-S50G speaker preview: Google Assistant in smart, subtle form

Sony LF-S50G speaker preview: Google Assistant in smart, subtle form

The LF-S50G is a compact speaker which uses Google Assistant artificial intelligence technology to answer spoken questions, make web searchers and crack jokes- the same virtual helper featured in Google Home, and the first non-Google smart speaker to feature it. According to the Japanese company, the new in-house feature facilitates 3D object scanning to help users set a live wallpaper, print on a 3D printer, enjoy augmented reality camera effects, create avatars, and work with other AR-related features. For Bluetooth pairing, there is NFC support on the device, and Sony has also added gesture controls for music playback.

The LF-S50G Wireless Speaker has an MSRP of $199.99 and will be available in October 2017.

Get ready - the robots are taking over, well, the voice assistants certainly are - and we're seeing more and more products feature the incredible smarts of online voice assistants.

The biggest feature of the Sony LF-S50G is Google Assistant. It also has an IPX3-rating and a water repellent coating so it can be placed in the kitchen or bathroom, as well as the living room or any other room you fancy it in. The Assistant on LF-S50G can also control a growing number of smart devices that can do nearly everything from setting the ideal temperature to turning down the lights. With a straightforward motion, you can play music and alter the volume of the tune as per your own inclination. The brilliant speaker may enable users to send messages from the speaker with the assistance of a voice-managed instant messages highlight. A wave across the top of the device will skip a track and you can also use gestures over the top to adjust the volume too. Once download is complete, the Google Home feature may be connected to the Sony device to access the voice control function. The LF-S50G also has an always-on clock that's embedded in its fabric. Besides, there is also a subwoofer onboard that offers bass to the sound.

The inside smarts are the same, with Google listening for your command and following your instructions.

Analysts seem confident the current consumer interest in smart speakers is more than just a flash in the pan, representing the future of both home entertainment and commerce.

Sony originally planned to make a smart speaker equipped with a proprietary conversational AI developed through a subsidiary.

Primarily, audio quality. Though the two have a very similar cylindrical design, the Sony LF-S50G promises enhanced audio that can fill an average sized room.

It will be available from November for £200.
