First Day Of School Uncertain For HISD

First Day Of School Uncertain For HISD

Earlier this week, officials said they hoped to start school following the Labor Day weekend.

"They just need to come, and we will help them", says Chrissy Hester, director of student services for the College Station school district.

"The flooding that is affecting the city of Houston has been devastating to so many". While we will never label nor limit students' ability and potential to succeed, we must celebrate their remarkable achievements and the steady gains in student academic progress.

While some families have the financial means to move in order to seek out better schools, many others don't, and the system forces them to settle for their zoned school, whether it suits their needs or not.

He also noted that most of the buildings HISD had not inspected were the ones inaccessible because of surrounding water.

In an August 29 newsletter to Louisiana school districts, state education superintendent John White stated "it is likely that a significant number" of students will be coming to Louisiana schools from out of state.

Even though all Houston students will be delayed, schools will have to play catch-up or abandon certain material to make sure kids are on track for the following year. Some still have hundreds of students who haven't met the requirements.

Psychological research has shown natural disasters and switching schools can both create intense feelings of stress in children.

Teachers unions across the country have sought to use President Trump's and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos' support for charters and school choice as reason enough to oppose them. Teams from the district are still assessing damages on the campuses, and unlike its news release, the district's tweet on the opening qualified the date with "weather and facility conditions permitting".

It remains to be seen how the devastation of Tropical Storm Harvey will impact the education of students from Texas, but Louisiana's schools chief is already encouraging districts to prepare for possible new students this year. Some past research has indicated this can cause students intense feelings of stress, negative emotions, and in the most extreme cases, psychosis-like symptoms of hallucinations and delusions.

In Calcasieu Parish, where floodwaters prompted the rescue of 500 people in the Lake Charles area, the school district initiated closures Monday.

When the agreement with the union was reached, the ministry established a $2 million fund for rural and remote school districts to help recruit and retain teachers.

Carranza is making an effort to reduce the psychological and physical damage exacted by Harvey, however.

The district also shortened the winter break from three weeks to two out of concern that some students would go hungry without school breakfast and lunch and that parents with inflexible schedules would not be able to afford childcare. He's soliciting further advice from school leaders in other states, particularly Louisiana, whose schools faced similar obstacles in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina. Many of their families were likely displaced by Harvey; some may have been killed. This is evidenced by the fact that we begin this school year with an astounding 66 percent of schools rated "A" or "B" and zero schools rated "F".
