New Zealand condemns North Korea's nuclear test

New Zealand condemns North Korea's nuclear test

North Korea, having received authorization from Kim Jong-un, conducted its sixth nuclear test at noon Sunday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration initially put the scale of the quake at magnitude 5.7. and said that the seismic wave was recorded at 12.36 p.m.

Seismological data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) showed that an explosion caused the tremor in the country's northeast, not far from the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, reports CNN.

Reuters states that President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe talked by phone about the "escalating" nuclear crisis in response to the North Korean claims.

Japan concluded that the tremors detected in North Korea were a nuclear explosion, marking the sixth atomic test by Pyongyang since 2006.

The same news outlet published images earlier Sunday showing leader Kim Jong-un inspecting a new H-bomb warhead.

The "artificial quake" was 9.8 times as powerful as the the last test in September 2016, South Korea's state weather agency said.

North Korea said it successfully detonated a nuclear weapon meant for an intercontinental ballistic missile, hours after saying it had developed an advanced hydrogen bomb of "great destructive power".

The state news report arrives as the USA and North Korea remain entangled in nuclear brinksmanship.

With the testing of a hydrogen bomb, North Korea is provoking the global community and defying the toughest set of sanctions ever imposed by the United Nations, reports CBS News' Pamela Falk.

As part of North Korea's work to build an arsenal of viable nuclear ICBMs that can reach the US mainland, Kim inspected during a visit to the North's Nuclear Weapons Institute the loading of a "homemade" H-bomb into an ICBM.

The US offered a conciliatory gesture toward the North, but Pyongyang responded with the firing of an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan last week.

The latest test seemed to bring North Korea a step closer to the goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ICBM capable of reaching the continental US.

The announcement came after Japanese, South Korean, and United States meteorological organizations said they had detected two tremors in North Korea.

The statement was enough to raise concerns in Washington, Japan and the Korean Peninsula about the state of North Korea's nuclear arsenal. Trump has been warning the Kim regime not to test him, warning on Twitter that the American military was "locked and loaded".
