Oklahoma National Guard deploying soldiers to Texas for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

Oklahoma National Guard deploying soldiers to Texas for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

The 10 Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers will join six Pennsylvania Air National Guard Airmen, who already deployed earlier this week. It is sending troops and helicopters to southeast Texas.

The guardsmen will conduct search and rescue operations, as well as other mission requirements as needed. "But everyone here has been really upbeat given the disaster". On Thursday afternoon, it reached 39. A Guard spokesman didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

The 1,500 guardsmen who are being sent are primary Army guardsmen who drill regularly, Phillips said.

Transport was via a C-47 Chinook helicopter from the 2-149th Aviation Battalion, Texas Army National Guard. The deployment is in response to an emergency management assistance compact request from Texas to Nebraska. "We stand ready and able to assist to our neighbors during their times of need", said Maj. Stephen Wright, a Guard public affairs specialist. "We're proud of those families too".

One unit of Texas National Guardsmen from San Antonio got lost during a security patrol as darkness fell, and one soldier used Snapchat to contact help and guide the group back to its command post, according to a Washington Post report.

The 1,500 soldiers will join the 15 members for the Arkansas National Guard's 61st Civil Support Team that left on Monday.

"Our thoughts are with the residents of Texas and all those impacted as they cope with the after effects of this devastating storm", Wolf said in a statement.

The Guard tweeted a picture of a military helicopter and soldiers announcing "The @MNNationalGuard is on way to help the @TXMilitary, @texasgov w/ #HarveyRelief!"
