Apple finally openly supports net neutrality

Apple finally openly supports net neutrality

Tech giants such as Facebook, Google and Amazon have long expressed their support for the current net neutrality regulations, but Apple had stayed quiet.

The iPhone maker's comments on the FCC's proposed Internet regulations outline a handful of policy goals, from promoting consumer choice and prohibiting Internet fast lanes that prioritize certain traffic, to providing transparency about how broadband providers manage traffic and networks.

Though telecom companies are not complaining, websites which earn from internet based services are far from happy. "Simply put, the internet is too important to consumers and too essential to innovation to be left unprotected and uncertain", the company said in the letter.

The docket on the "Restoring Internet Freedom" plan from commission Chairman Ajit Pai closed with more than 21.8 million comments in total-though some have suggested numerous comments aren't from engaged citizens but rather from bots and automated services.

Apple finally has something to say about net neutrality. Form letters (pre-generated portions of text) made up roughly 90 percent of comments supporting net neutrality and 99.6 percent of comments for Title II repeal.

If the ban is lifted on Paid Prioritization, this will enable ISPs to transmit content or services of one provider over another. But Ajit Pai, the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, wants to rewrite the rules. "There is simply no reasonable justification for repealing the net neutrality protections now on the books". "As we've said before, and as both sides of the aisle have agreed, it's time for Congress to enact bipartisan legislation that permanently establishes sensible and enforceable open internet protections". "The result would be an internet with distorted competition where online providers are driven to reach deals with broadband providers or risk being stuck in the slow lane and losing customers due to lower quality service".

There are 21.9 million fillings on the FCC's "Restoring Internet Freedom" docket already, blowing away the four million received before the 2015 decision that imposed net neutrality rules.
