A Massive Black Hole in the Center of the Milky Way

A Massive Black Hole in the Center of the Milky Way

Its unusual movement signaled towards a huge "compact object" at the centre, which scientists suspect of being a black hole.

That could be the case here, too, with the newly discovered intermediate - found in a gas cloud called CO-0.40-0.22 - thought to be destined for a slow, one-way trip towards Sagittarius A*, into which it would ultimately be subsumed.

And, the jets shooting from the black holes helped the process along, by triggering cooling.

It's believed they could be the seeds of their more massive counterparts - merging together to form a big one. intermediate black holes might simply turn out to be their progenitors.

This system has powerful jets streaming from the black hole at the center, according to Horizon.

Although it is well established they reside in seemingly all galaxies we do not know how they get so enormous.

It's hard to find black holes - because they are completely black.

But if there really is a large (but not supermassive) black hole hiding in our galaxy, it must have come from somewhere.

It is a giant "black hole" in the center of our galaxy, 100,000 times stronger than the sun, hidden behind a toxic gas nebula, 25,000 light-years from Earth!

Professor Tomoharu Oka and colleagues used computer simulations to show the high velocity motion, or kinematics, of the gas could only be explained by an intermediate black hole concealed in its midst. The researchers spotted what appeared to be a huge cloud of gas behaving oddly in the interior of the Milky Way.

Artist impression of a black hole. "It's the most promising evidence so far" for an intermediate mass black hole, says astronomer Kevin Schawinski of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, who was not involved in the study. Nearby is the gas cloud CO-0.40-0.22, probable home to an intermediate-mass black hole. The team noted those features could be explained by a "gravitational kick" caused by an "invisible compact object with a mass of about 105 solar masses", Newsweek reports.

'If you have a rotating black hole with an accretion disk (particles orbiting the black hole), it can actually act like a kind of dynamo, ' Emonts said.

Scientists believe they've discovered a new type of black hole at the heart of the Milky Way galaxy. "Theoretical studies have predicted that 100 million to one billion black holes should exist in the Milky Way, although only 60 or so have been identified through observations so far", the scientists wrote.

Observations with some of the biggest radio telescopes in the world have provided evidence that supermassive black holes are far more than 'all-powerful cosmic drains.' Scientists suspect black holes may have a major impact on the formation of galaxies.

The finding can possibly lead to proof for generational relativity, a step that scientists claim would "make a considerable contribution to the progress of modern physics".
