Kenya: A new presidential election held on the 17th October

Kenya: A new presidential election held on the 17th October

The country's electoral commission had already declared incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta the victor of last month's election, with 54.3 percent of the vote in a contest were almost 80 percent of Kenya's 19 million registered voters were said to have cast ballots.

Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga said on Sunday his coalition would only go to the election when they are sure the electoral commission will not take a side, adding that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) can not protect their votes.

Supporters of Kenya's National Super Alliance (NASA) celebrate after the Supreme Court ordered a re-run of the August 8 presidential poll in Nairobi.

Kenya's president says he'll respect a court decision that voids the result of last month's election that returned him to office.

He was speaking a day after the Supreme Court annulled his election win last month and ordered a new poll within 60 days.

Entry by Raila Odinga, the supreme Court had struck down on Friday the election of 8 August, which had given a victor Uhuru Kenyatta, saying that she had "not been conducted in accordance with the Constitution", and that of "illegalities and irregularities (had) affected the integrity" of the ballot.

After Kenyatta was declared the victor last month by 54% to 45% over Odinga, sporadic violence erupted in some areas, claiming the lives of at least 24 people.

He has also declared that his coalition would not share power, two days after the Supreme Court annulled presidential election results, citing irregularities. But the ruling by the Supreme Court of Kenya, has shown that we will no longer sit and allow advantage of incumbency affect our elections...

Peter Mac-Manu however stated that his presence in the country was neither to rig an election nor work in the interest of one party against the other indicating that the outcome of the court's ruling further exposes those behind his deportation.

While congratulating the good people of Kenya on the historical judgement, he called on them to be law abiding and shun violence. Friday's ruling was the first time a court supported his claim.

Mr Odinga has said that the electoral commission as now constituted should not be permitted to conduct the fresh election, saying it was complicit in electoral fraud.

Accompanied by his running mate, Kalonzo Musyoka, Mr. Odinga demanded legal and constitutional guarantees from the IEBC that the repeat election will be free and fair.

The chairman of the election board said in a statement that there would be personnel changes, but it was not clear if that would be enough for the opposition.

The embattled leader argued that the results of the members of parliament, senators and governors were transmitted but "no one asked any questions".

When Kenyatta was declared the victor last month, he said that "in a true democracy, all Kenyans are winners".

Judges read short remarks criticising the process but did not go into detail, saying they needed more time to consider more than 80,000 pages submitted as evidence. Those resentments have lingered since Kenyan independence in 1964, when Kenyatta's father, Jomo Kenyatta, became the nation's first president.
