Chance The Rapper Spearheading Awards Show For Teachers

The Grammy-winning rapper made his comments at a news conference as he announced details of raising more than $2.2 million for 20 schools across Chicago.

"In the summertime when the city's at its most handsome point, when people are supposed to be outside enjoying themselves, there's an undercurrent of something ominous", he said Friday in announcing the grants at the Harold Washington Cultural Center.

The donations will be spread be 20 schools in the Chicago public school system, with each school receiving $100,000 over the course of three years. Bennett said each principal has also committed to finding the necessary funds to ensure fully staffed arts education programs at their respective schools.

During that time, principals will regularly meet with members of SocialWorks to be guided on budgeting as well as staffing the programs.

"As a parent and proud product of CPS, I'm committed to helping Chicago's children have quality learning experiences that include the arts", said Chance via a press release.

The schools were chosen based on CPS ratings and how much the schools were affected by budget cuts, the musician said. A second batch of $10,000 donations were given to 12 other schools later that month, when the Chicago Bulls donated $1 million to the musician's campaign. He said he hopes his fundraising campaign and the enhancement of arts programming can help create paths for success for those children.

"At a young age, Chance The Rapper has endeared himself to Chicago and the nation through his talent and passionate commitment to his community", explained Sepanta Bagherpour, Vice President of Marketing for Nando's PERi-PERi USA.
