KFC in China tests letting people pay by smiling

KFC in China tests letting people pay by smiling

The payment system will work by having payment authenticated through a combination of facial scanning along with an input of the payer's mobile phone number.

Ant Financial said the Smile to Pay technology has reached a level of accuracy and security that should put Alipay users at ease. It remains to be seen whether facial-recognition payments are something customers actually consider to be useful - but with rumors that the next iPhone will have similar technology, it's easy to imagine a world where everyone is paying for things using their faces, rather than swiping their credit cards.

Alipay has launched a new way to pay for your KFC in China - by smiling.

Alibaba 's Ant Financial has teamed up with KFC in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou to debut its news "smile to pay" service. KFC introduced KPRO in July to draw in young Chinese consumers looking for healthier fare such as salads and juices, rather than the global chain's trademark fried chicken. The scan is compared to the picture recorded against the person's Alipay account for verification.

The algorithm used accurately and securely determines a user's identity by detecting shadows and other features that only come from living beings rather than a video or photograph. To add more security, it requires your phone number as well in order to pay the bills.

At the annual CeBit tech exhibition in Hanover, Germany in March 2015, Alibaba founder and chief executive Jack Ma first showed off the "Smile to Pay" technology.

Redefining the term "happy meal", fast food fanatics in China now just need to flash their smiles to earn their dinner. It was also demoed in January at CES.

With the aim to revolutionise offline retail spaces through a new technology, the Alibaba Group had launched a cashless store earlier this year.
