Millions of Time Warner Customer Records Exposed in Third-Party Data Leak

Millions of Time Warner Customer Records Exposed in Third-Party Data Leak

A researcher for Kromtech discovered records for more than four million customers of Charter division Time Warner Cable and other companies' data that the research firm says Broadsoft stored on Inc.'s cloud service.

CCTV footage, presumably of BroadSoft's workers in Bengaluru, India-where the breach is believed to have originated-was also discovered on the Amazon bucket.

The TWC record information was not unique for all details exposed, instances of duplicate information, were also seen, meaning the breach ultimately exposed less than four million customers.

"We see more and more examples of how bad actors use leaked or hacked data for a range of crimes or other unethical purposes", Bob Diachenko, Kromtech's chief communications officer said.

This data included usernames, emails addresses, MAC addresses, device serial numbers, and financial transaction information - thought not credit card data.

Millions of records containing the personal details of Time Warner Cable (TWC) customers have been discovered in a publicly accessible storage repository.

The security researchers were investigating a different data breach incident at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

"Even if companies realise they've accidentally published sensitive data via Amazon and locked up their data buckets, there is always the risk that Google has already indexed and cached the information", Mr Cluley said.

Those affected were Time Warner Cable customers who mainly used the My TWC app, and the company is advising the app users to change passwords, the Hollywood Reporter said. Both BroadSoft and Charter say they're investigating and will take extra steps to address the situation if necessary.

Representatives of BroadSoft did not immediately respond to a query.

BroadSoft has hundreds of network operator customers, all of which will be wondering if any of their data is being held in exposed databases. "We apologie for the frustration and anxiety this causes, and will communicate directly to customers if their information was involved in this incident", the company stated.

The company said that there is now no indication that Charter's systems were impacted, but advised its customers who do use the MyTWC app to change their login credentials.

Charter Communications - which acquired Time Warner Cable in 2016 and renamed it as Spectrum - said the exposed information was immediately removed after the discovery and the incident is now being investigated along with BroadSoft.
