Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigns from Cabinet ahead of expected reshuffle

Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigns from Cabinet ahead of expected reshuffle

Among them, Rajiv Pratap Rudy was the first to submit his resignation on Thursday night as Minister for Skills Development. Their resignations comes ahead of the much awaited Cabinet reshuffle, expected to take place on Saturday.

News reports said Uma Bharti and Nirmala Sitharaman had also offered to resign.

Existing ministers Dharmendra Pradhan (petroleum) and Piyush Goyal (power), who have independent charge of their respective ministries, may be elevated to Cabinet positions.

A reshuffle will help the Narendra Modi government weed out the dead wood from the government and infuse new blood in the cabinet. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley holding an additional ministry of defense is likely to stick to only one ministry, that is finance. It could have happened on Friday as well but as President Ram Nath Kovind would be away, on a two-day visit to Tirupati, September 2 evening or September 3 morning are being seen as possible windows available to Team Modi for reshuffle.

People aware of the developments said more ministers may resign as Modi prepares to induct new faces, including those from the Janata Dal (United), or JDU, and All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), into his council of ministers.

Kalraj Mishra, Sanjiv Baliyan, Giriraj Singh, and Radha Mohan Singh are also among the ones who have reportedly resigned.

Earlier in the day, BJP president Amit Shah chaired a meeting of top BJP leaders in the national capital, ANI reported.

The last Cabinet reshuffle took place in July a year ago, in which Modi inducted 19 new faces and elevated Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar to Cabinet rank.

"At least not for very long", Jaitley said in response to questions on how long he would continue as Defence Minister. Prabhu may be given the charge of the environment ministry. However, the PM had asked him to wait.

In the last elections in 2012 when Modi was the State's Chief Minister, the BJP had won 116 seats.
