Track-focused Mini concept takes JCW back to its roots

Track-focused Mini concept takes JCW back to its roots

Mini showed a insane side we usually don't see with the John Cooper Works GP Concept. Like the brand's Electric Mini Concept, which is also due to make an appearance at Frankfurt, the GP is based on the same basic body shell as on the current third generation vehicle.

On the outside the John Cooper Works GP concept is wider than the production MINI Cooper, with its large fenders, side skirts and a huge rear spoiler.

On the inside, the cabin has been stripped of all the luxuries in exchange for bucket seats with a five-point race harness and a roll cage. We should know more about this, and especially its engine, as of September 14th, during this 67th edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It's also likely that some of the Concept's more extreme design elements will be toned down before the next John Cooper Works GP reaches the showroom. A big emergency cut-off button is on the dash and the vehicle uses a start/stop button. Noticeably missing from the interior are the rear seat bench, headliner, and conventional door trim panels, all of which were tossed out to reduce weight.

As you can see, this is no ordinary MINI Cooper.

In a hint that future Mini models will provide a more digitally orientated control system, the suspension settings can be altered via a touch sensitive display. It delivered 160kW and 280Nm of torque on the overboost, providing the front-wheel drive track focused hatchback with a 0-100km/h time of 6.3sec and top speed of 242km/h. The use of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber optimizes the car's power-to-weight ratio. In the meantime, stay tuned and just ogle at the pictures. In honor of the latest John Cooper Works GP in 2012 and Cooper S with JCW GP in 2006 (both 218 hp), this study adopts a dynamic style.

As with the previous two Mini John Cooper Works GP models, the upcoming third-generation model is expected to be produced in limited numbers and sold at a high premium to less-powerful models.

I'd love to say this signals that Mini's going to start making plenty of hardcore, track-ready enthusiast cars, but it doesn't.
