Trump to Announce Decision on DACA's Future

Trump to Announce Decision on DACA's Future

President Donald Trump on Tuesday is expected to rescind a programme shielding from deportation some immigrants who came to the United States illegally as children, throwing their fate to Congress, which would have six months to find a fix.

Trump said from the outset of his presidency he would treat DACA carefully and promised to "show great heart" when asked how he would handle the program.

Trump is looking at whether the U.S. state attorneys general who seek a decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) are willing to extend their deadline of September 5 for action from Trump.

Washington state's attorney general is threatening legal action if President Donald Trump ends a program that protects young immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children.

There is fear the Trump administration will repeal DACA, meaning the Dreamers would again be at risk of separation from their families and from the only community they have ever known. Some enrollees are now on their third term.

Are all DREAMers part of DACA?

Corey Stone has been an advocate for DACA recipients for a few years.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have arrived in the U.S. before age 16.

To apply for DACA, immigrants must have come to the United States before 2007. Obama created the program by way of executive actions in June 2012. They had to have a clean criminal record and be enrolled in high school or have a high school diploma or equivalent.

"Despite the fact they might take DACA away, they can not take our dignity away". In order to qualify, applicants under 30 must submit personal information to the Department of Homeland Security.

Though Trump is due to formally announce his decision on Tuesday, sources have cautioned that he could still change his mind.

Who is fighting for and against DACA?

It appeared that Trump favored continuing DACA. Most of those taking advantage of DACA are Latinos and Asians.

Trump, however, is facing the pressure from Sessions and other state attorney generals.

In addition to Zuckerberg, the letter to Trump and congressional leaders was signed by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Google's Sundar Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella and numerous other business leaders.
