Jaguar Land Rover to electrify all new vehicles by 2020

Jaguar Land Rover to electrify all new vehicles by 2020

Acclaimed as "the most attractive vehicle in the world", the E-Type Zero is a 1968 Series 1.5 Roadster dragged into the 21st century.

Jaguar says the vehicle still handles, rides and brakes exactly like an original E-Type.

This motor will be capable of launching the classic from 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph and a real world range of around 170 miles.

Central to the concept is the unique steering wheel. Part of the ceremony was the unveiling of the Jaguar E-Type Zero.

Those who love the sound of Jaguar Land Rover's vehicles might be upset to hear the company is planning electric versions of every model in the showroom after the year 2020. Also, Sweden's Volvo had earlier said it would end gas-only vehicle production and introduce cars with some sort of sort of plug-in capability starting in 2019.

Tim Hannig, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: "We could use this technology to transform any classic XK-engine Jaguar". Called the Future-Type, the model is fully autonomous and "explores mobility for the connected world of tomorrow where vehicles could be shared and not owned".

Jaguar have put on a whole event in the United Kingdom dedicated to tech - their inaugural Tech-Fest and they've kicked it off with two big bits of news, and I'm not sure which I'm more excited about. At the event, it is also showing the Jaguar I-Pace and the Jaguar Future-Type, a futuristic virtual concept auto that, according to the company, "explores mobility for the connected world of tomorrow, where vehicles could be shared, not owned". The I-Pace, for example, goes on sale next year. "We're looking forward to the reaction of our clients as we investigate bringing this concept to market".

Remember 'Sayer', your trusty steering wheel companion from the future, able to attach to a semi-autonomous auto to take you places? It's part of our vision for how a luxury auto brand could continue to be desirable, in a more digital and autonomous age,"explained Jaguar design boss Ian Callum".

He commented: "The premium end of things is moving more quickly [towards electrification] in part because electric vehicle costs are higher at the moment because of battery costs, so they can absorb that".
