FBI Investigating Uber For Spying On Lyft

FBI Investigating Uber For Spying On Lyft

The investigation is being led by the FBI's NY office and the Manhattan U.S. attorney's office, the Journal said.

USA federal authorities are investigating Uber over whether it interfered with the app of rival firm Lyft illegally.

Uber told CNBC that it's cooperating with the investigation.

The FBI is reportedly investigating whether Uber illegally interfered with ride-sharing competitor Lyft. Apart from driver locations and routes, the app was able to gather data on Lyft's ride prices, insiders said. Needless to say, these are serious violations and it is not surprising that this practice is now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It also allegedly allowed Uber to track which drivers worked for both Lyft and Uber. The FBI, however, is interested in whether "Hell" could be considered unauthorized access of a computer, at least according to sources speaking The Wall Street Journal. The class action lawsuit against Uber over the Hell program was dismissed last week, but an amended complaint will be filed later this month. The company used the software to evade law enforcement sting operations in several cities.

Then, last month, the Justice Department took initial steps to investigate the managers at the company due to their violations against foreign bribery. Now, the new CEO has another problem to deal with-an FBI investigation. He would also face a lawsuit with rival Alphabet about stolen trade secrets. Uber staff used this software in tracking individual riders, thereby, risking their privacy.

The so-called Hell program is just one of the many issues that are on the plate for new Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who has been on the post for just two weeks.

He said that he'd create a new set of core values for the company.
