History-Making Anderson Roars Into US Open Final

History-Making Anderson Roars Into US Open Final

He will face world number one Rafael Nadal or 24th seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in Sunday's final.

Pablo Carreno Busta has backed Kevin Anderson to win the US Open if he plays his best stuff against Rafael Nadal, although he admitted his compatriot is the clear favourite.

Anderson is the first South African to reach the US Open final here since Cliff Drysdale lost to Manuel Santana on the grass of nearby Forest Hills in 1965.

He said: "It's been a long road".

"It's been an wonderful season for me and I'm so happy to get a chance to fight for another title after a couple of seasons with injury troubles", said Nadal, who won a record-extending 10th French Open title in June.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Anderson - who never progressed beyond the fourth round of a major before this year's US Open - said: "It's definitely an wonderful feeling being in this position and have worked very hard to get here". It was an unbelievably tough match for me.

"I really had to dig deep there", Anderson, who smacked 22 aces in the match, said in his on-court interview with ESPN.

"I'm over the moon". However, he was still unable to find any replies to the invincible Anderson serve and thus remained on serve in the early stages. And he struck 58 winners to the Spaniard's 21.

Anderson took the third set on his third set point, serving a 132-mph ace to take a two-sets-to-one lead.

Anderson was soon 5-4 ahead, hitting his 100th ace of the tournament in the process before leveling the tie in the 12th game courtesy of a Carreno Busta double fault and a fierce backhand victor.

Carreno Busta broke the huge Anderson serve in game seven on his way to win the first set.

Anderson improved to 3-0 against Carreno Busta, but he hasn't had any success against either Nadal or del Potro.

Since his relatively late entrance into Grand Slam tennis, Carreno Busta has endured a roller-coaster career.

In the female category, Sloane Stephens, who became the first American woman besides the Williams sisters to reach the US Open semifinals since 2004 defeated Venus Williams 6-1 0-6 7-5 in the semi-final on Thursday, to make her first Grand Slam final.

However, his last loss at this stage came on the same NY hard courts in 2009 at the hands of Del Potro, who went on to shock five-time champion Federer in the final. "Congrats to him, because we played very good match". When Nadal is playing such clean tennis, there's few who can even push him to a competitive match.

Martina Hingis will play in the finals of both women's doubles and mixed doubles at the U.S. Open.

Del Potro has been virtually running on empty.

The Argentine closed out the first set with a lightning quick forehand.

He nearly retired from that titanic clash, suffering from breathing difficulties and a fever.
