Kevin Anderson's mom says United States open feature makes everything 'worthwhile'

Kevin Anderson's mom says United States open feature makes everything 'worthwhile'

The Spaniard struggled to handle Del Potro's serve and huge forehand in the opening set before finding his stride to set up a title-decider with South Africa's Kevin Anderson on Sunday.

The 31-year-old right handed South African player fought back from a set down to sweep out Busta in four sets 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4.

Speaking of his own performance at the US Open - where he reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, ' the Spaniard added 'Of course.

The 6-foot-8 South African is the first man from his country to reach the US Open semifinals since Johan Kriek in 1980, and looks to become the first, male or female, to reach the final since ESPN analyst Cliff Drysdale in 1965.

Anderson will try to win his first major title against the victor of No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 24 seed Juan Martin del Potro, two former US Open winners. Anderson has won just one set against Nadal in all four meetings, and this is their fourth match on hard court.

With Hollywood star Robert Redford and Microsoft founder Bill Gates looking on, the big South African carved out the first break of the second set for 3-1 but handed it back straightaway in the next game.

Carreno Busta closed it out but Anderson settled down after a see-sawing second set and delivered his 20th ace to take the third. Anderson continues to serve extremely well and is coming off a match in which he had 69 percent of his first serves in play. Held on for the set 6-3. But at the same time, I think I played a solid match.

"Rafa just play even better the last three sets of the match, and I couldn't hit my backhand as good as I did in the beginning of the match", said Del Potro.

He will bid to go one better than Curren, who was runner-up at the 1984 Australian Open final before switching citizenship to the United States ahead of his run to the Wimbledon final.

"I don't know if the team hug was appropriate after the semi-finals, but it felt like the right thing to do", he said.

Anderson finished with a power-packed 22 aces and 58 winners. He thanked his family for their support after his win on Friday, with brother Greg getting a special mention for nurturing his Grand Slam dream from a young age. "I mean, Rafa now is playing within himself a lot". I had to change a couple of things after the first set because I was playing on his backhand too much and he was waiting for me there. The Spaniard did, after all, get very shaky in losing early in the tournament here in the last two years against opposition he was expected to beat, and he has so far had a comfortable draw. "He said:" If he's in the final, he can beat everyone. Interestingly, it is the first time in Grand Slam history that someone has faced four qualifiers in a row.
