Rafael Nadal Storms Into US Open Final

Rafael Nadal Storms Into US Open Final

Nadal, the overwhelming favourite, has no intention to underestimate Anderson, the lowest-ranked US Open finalist since the ATP rankings began in 1973. With so numerous world's top men crocked by injury and those left standing either in their 30s or on the verge of them, this was the moment for the new generation to make their mark.

Spanish star Rafael Nadal qualified for the men's singles final at the US Open tennis tournament with a hard fought victory over Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina here.

It seemed to be all over in the third set when he broke Federer to go 3-2 up, and with the momentum and a sold-out Arthur Ashe crowd in his corner, he sealed the deal with another forehand victor. Surprisingly the defeat was witnessed on the same court eight years ago.

This time, Federer entered the quarterfinals 18-0 in Grand Slam play this season, including titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon to raise his record count to 19 major championships. But he does not care: this is what his dreams are made of.

"I don't want to take anything from Juan Martin but when you get injured before a tournament, you are not focused on training or on how to play during the tournament".

"So it was one of those matches where if I ran into a good guy, I was going to lose, I felt".

"Against Rafa it's going to be the same".

"To be back here in front of this incredible crowd, on this unbelievable court, and to have the chance to fight for another title is so important to me".

Juan Martin del Potro had beaten Rafael Nadal the past two times they played.

There was some sublime shotmaking by each player, but also some real shakiness from the 36-year-old Federer, whose forehand in particular was problematic: 22 of his 41 unforced errors came on that stroke. Federer is a five-time champion in NY, winning the title five consecutive times from 2004-08.

Del Potro said that simply walking out into Arthur Ashe Stadium for his quarter-final against Federer had made him put his physical difficulties to one side. And everything is to win. "It's the moment to give my best". He really controls the court well, the few times I have played him. So I think the first set was very good for me. I am in the semi-finals.

The victor of today's match will be anointed as champion elect.

Kevin Anderson, a South Africa native who played tennis at the University of IL and lives in Florida, got off to a slow start in his U.S. Open semifinal against Pablo Carreno Busta on Friday but gradually gained strength and earned a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory to advance to Sunday's men's final. Nadal fired 45 winners as Del Potro ran out of steam.

"I don't feel I [made] many mistakes after that first set", Nadal reflected. But he didn't and it hasn't. "Important victory against a great opponent", Nadal said. "Then there are small adjustments, if you can do it, yes". But then he started to play more aggressive....

"The way I played or playing right now, it's not good enough in my opinion to win this tournament". You were. It's not more frustrating.
