Reborn TVR unveils first new auto

Reborn TVR unveils first new auto

It features head-turning bodywork, there's a 5-litre V8 petrol engine, a six-speed manual gearbox and drive goes to the rear wheels.

In terms of proportions, the new TVR Griffith measures 4314mm in length, is 1850mm wide and 1239mm high, and putting that into context, Porsche's current 718 Cayman measures 4379mm, 1801mm and 1205mm respectively. That bright red body is also made from carbon fiber, which keeps the Griffith's weight nice and low.

So far nearly, all of the 500 Launch Edition Griffiths have been sold. The bodywork is composite and aluminum and has benefited from considerably more aerodynamic consideration than any previous TVR, including what's described as a "full ground-effect aerodynamic package" with a flat floor, a novelty for a front-engined vehicle.

However, TVR wants to pitch the Griffith as sports auto with old-school fun for driving purists. It also gets a bespoke lighter flywheel and clutch.

The first TVR for a decade has been uncovered - and it's a £90,000 sports vehicle that will top 200mph.

It's no slouch either, with a 0-60mph time of less than four seconds and a top speed of 200mph. The auto rides on 275/30 R20 section tyres at the rear, and 235/35 R19s at the front.

The two-seater interior is a little more sparse but there are traditional dials and switches mixed in with up-to-date infotainment screens.

Beneath the David Seesing-designed carbon body, and hung from the iStream chassis with its 50:50 weight distribution, are double-wishbones front and rear, with adjustable coil-over dampers and concentric springs. Now the British company is back, firing on all cylinders with a new version of the Griffith - the first of a range of four cars that might be just the tonic for drivers who believe most modern sports cars are missing a vital ingredient: soul. Look closely and you'll detect the windscreen wiper controls and air vents seem to be borrowed from Ford, while the ominously labelled "Kill" switch is likely to be an electrical or engine cutoff rather than anything more exciting. TVR also promises there will be "more than adequate" luggage space, so long trips with you and a passenger will definitely be doable.

The British manufacturer was bought in 2013 by entrepreneurs Les Edgar and John Chasey and today revealed its first production auto since the takeover, which features a 5.0-litre Ford V8 engine. Production of the TVR Griffith Launch Edition should begin late next year, with pricing starting at £90,000 (about US$118,800).
