Clashes at protests in South Korea injure dozens

Clashes at protests in South Korea injure dozens

"A special measure is urgently needed to stop their recklessness".

Protesters shout slogans during a rally against the deployment of an advanced USA missile defense system called Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, near the presidential Blue House in Seoul, South Korea, Friday, Sept. 8, 2017.

Tensions are running high near a former golf course in Seongju, South Korea, as news reached anti-THAAD activists that four additional launchers of the US missile defense system are to be deployed early Thursday.

A THAAD battery normally consists of six launchers capable of firing up to 48 interceptor missiles, but only two have been operational. Japan, the United States and South Korea should step up their cooperation in urging Russian Federation and China to intensify their pressure on North Korea to force the country to abandon its provocative acts.

During their meeting in the Russian city of Vladivostok, Moon urged Putin to back stricter penalties against President Kim Jong Un's government after it successfully tested a nuclear bomb on Sunday that could be attached to an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking the USA mainland.

"At the same time, it is obvious that the Korean problems can not be settled with sanctions and pressure alone".

Abe conveyed to Moon Tokyo's stance that all postwar compensation claims have been resolved and settled under a 1965 bilateral accord that led to the normalization of diplomatic ties, the official said.

Putin is now in China's Xiamen to meet the leaders of BRICS - which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The ruling Democratic Party of Korea, which has opposed THAAD deployment from the start, defended the decision saying that it was unavoidable in light of recent developments. Launchers and other components were brought to Seongju, about 300kms south of Seoul, amid heavy protests from the locals and environmental activists.

During a call with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Trump also gave "conceptual approval" for South Korea to buy billions of dollars of weapons from the United States, the White House said in a statement.

South Korean ships including a 2,500-ton frigate, a 1,000-ton patrol ship and 400-ton guided-missile vessels participated in the drills aimed at retaliating against potential North Korean provocations, the Defence Ministry said.

The UN Security Council was meeting today to discuss the test.

Russian Federation has also criticized the move. In response, Moon noted his government's appreciation of Russia's support for the cause of building "a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula and improved relations between the two Korean states".

"The two leaders shared the same view that now is the time to further strengthen sanctions and pressure on North Korea to the maximum level", a South Korean presidential spokesman said during a briefing, according to the presidential office.

The heated words from the United States and the military manoeuvres in South Korea are becoming familiar responses to North Korea's rapid, as-yet unchecked weapons progress.

Pyongyang said the device it detonated on Sunday was a hydrogen bomb.

He has also publicly weighed scrapping a U.S. trade deal with South Korea in a bid to fulfill promises he made during the election campaign, and threatened to make South Korea pay for THAAD, even though it was Washington pushing for the system's deployment.

"I am convinced that we can avoid a large-scale conflict including weapons of mass destruction in the region and that we can solve this problem through diplomacy".
