David Johnson gets up slowly after hit in red zone

In the fourth quarter, with the Lions down two, Matthew Stafford lobbed a ball to the edge of the end zone, trusting his young receiver to leap and snatch the catch away from the defending Justin Bethel.

The Detroit Lions opened their regular season at home on Sunday, September 10th, with a hard-fought victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Stafford's pick came two plays after Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer threw an equally ugly interception. He hit a 58-yarder in the first half. Golladay is nowhere near Johnson's level yet - remember, he's just a rookie, only caught four of seven targets for 69 yards and will surely have growing pains in the future - but this was an impressive start.

Our models rank Jones as the 49th-best receiver in Week 1 with 3.6 receptions, 47.2 yards and 0.2 touchdowns.

The Detroit Lions started slow Sunday, but in the National Football League, it's not about the start, but the finish. If the offense can find rhythm and the defense continues its strong play, the Lions might have a chance to be pretty good this year.

David Johnson was taken out of the Cardinals game with the Lions in the third quarter after suffering an injury.

The teams briefly traded punts, but as the Lions lined up to boot it out of their own end zone, punter Kasey Redfern dropped the snap and was forced to scramble.

Both teams are coming off preseason losses, the Cardinals fell 2-30 to the Broncos while the Lions suffered a 17-27 loss to the Bills. By the start of the second half, Jamal Agnew was Detroit's kick returner.

Left tackle D.J. Humphires went to the locker room and linebacker Marcus Golden went to the sidelines with what looked like a poke in the eye.

Stafford finished his day 29-41 for 292 yards, four touchdowns and the one interception.
