Mexico quake death toll rises as Hurricane Katia hits Gulf coast

"At first I laughed, but when the lights went out I didn't know what to do". The governor of neighboring Tabasco state said two children had died, bringing the death toll to six. Two others died in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

It had a depth of 43.3 miles (69.7 kilometres), the USGS said.

At least 90 people killed across the country as emergency workers still look for victims under the rubble. People were camping and sleeping outside out of fear of more aftershocks and damage. It's common for different agencies to arrive at slightly different calculations of quake magnitude.

Officials said the death toll there could rise.

The quake struck at 11:49 p.m. Thursday. It also triggered a tsunami warning and the evacuation of thousands of people in coastal communities in Chiapas. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude at 8.1, but other institutions rated it between 8.2 and 8.4.

Authorities say that a hotel in Oaxaca has collapsed, but no one has been reported dead.

"The power of this quake was devastating, but we are certain that the power of unity, the power of solidarity and the power of shared responsibility will be greater", Peña Nieto said in a televised address on Friday.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday commiserated with the President of Mexico, Enrique Pina Nieto, over the devastating quake that claimed the lives of 65 people in that country.

It was initially measured at 8.1 on the Richter scale but the magnitude was later set at 8.4.

The Mexican Seismological Service said 721 aftershocks had been recorded since the initial tremor, with reports saying that hundreds of families were camping on the streets, afraid of strong aftershocks.

This time damage to the city was limited, as the quake was deeper and further from the capital.

Relief measures have started in various towns of Mexico.

The natural disaster triggered a small tsunami, with waves of about 2.3 feet.

Residents were advised that tsunami waves could hit within three hours off the coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and Ecuador.

No threat was posed to Hawaii and the western and South Pacific.

The death toll from a powerful quake that struck Mexico has risen to 32, the governor of the southern state of Oaxaca said Friday.

Ignacio Chavez said his son died in the quake.
