Miami Floods During Hurricane Irma Storm Surge

Miami Floods During Hurricane Irma Storm Surge

Two cranes atop high-rise buildings under construction collapsed Sunday in downtown Miami amid strong winds from Hurricane Irma.

A second crane collapse was later reported at a building under construction, the Gran Paraiso development on Northeast 30th Terrace. No injuries were reported. The boom is still connected to the crane's tower by a cable, hanging partially over the building's side.

"We're trying to find out what its potential path downward is and how to secure it", Maloney said by phone. According to city officials, it would have taken about two weeks to move the cranes and there wasn't enough time.

For an entire generation in South Florida, Hurricane Andrew was the monster storm that reshaped a region.

"This is a hurricane that I've never seen before, so we are preparing here", Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said today in an interview with ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America".

"Streets have to be closed, another crane has to be brought in", he said.

The general contractor is Moriarty, Pons said.

The horizontal arms of the tall tower cranes, however, will remain loose despite the potential danger of collapse. "Taking them is not something you can easily do".

"This is a life-threatening situation", the National Hurricane Center said. Officials urged anyone living near one to evacuate if Irma hit as a Category 5 hurricane.

Florida's building codes require structures in the Miami area to be able to withstand extreme hurricane wind speeds, but not all building elements perform the same way under storm stresses.
